I have read this psalm many times now. I have also read the biblical background and what is written in the commentaries. And yet I can’t get over how many seeming contradictions it contains. On the one hand we have phrases like “O God, You have cast us off”, “broken us down”, “shown Your people hard things” and “You, O God, who did not go out with our armies.” On the other hand we have victory phrases like, “given a banner to those who fear You”, “I will rejoice”, “shout in triumph” and “we will do valiantly.”

It sounds very much like the last few decades in the history of our country. So many triumphs and victories, even miracles, yet also so many hard things, confusion and trouble. It also reminds me of my own life, my personal journey. Wonderful seasons of faith and breakthroughs when God felt so near, but also many times of doubt and struggling when God was silent.

Life is unpredictable. Life is hard at times. Circumstances are forever changing, therefore our feelings and emotions will swing from happiness to despair, smiles to tears.

But, take courage everyone, God is faithful…! Always…!

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. ( Heb 13:8 )

For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” ( Heb 13:5 )

For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. ( 2 Cor 1:20 )

Therefore, in good times and bad times, we can agree with David in this psalm, “God has spoken in His holiness: I will rejoice;” ( Psalm 60:6 )
